01Overview

Before leaving Laos, the Mekong spreads fourteen kilometres wide and shatters into an archipelago. Don Det runs on hammock time; Don Khon keeps a rusting French railway and a pod of Irrawaddy dolphins in its channel. Wi-fi is optional and so is urgency.

Det for sociable-cheap, Khon for couples-quiet; the bridge makes it one island anyway.

Will I see dolphins?

Dry season mornings give good odds at the border pool; it's a sighting, not a show.

Onward to Cambodia?

Direct minivan+bus combos to Stung Treng/Kratie run daily — book at any island agent.

Rider's note: Bring cash from Pakse — the islands' ATMs are moody and card acceptance is folklore.
