Who is it for?

Best for

  • Sunrise balloon riders — the karst from the air justifies the town
  • Climbers & cavers: crags and lagoon caves within cycling range
  • Recovering party town sceptics: it grew up, mostly

Skip if

  • Blue Lagoon 1 at midday is your idea of nature — it's a swimming-pool crowd
  • You won't ride a scooter/buggy: the good lagoons are 7–15 km out

01Overview

The party town that grew up. The tubing bars are mostly gone; what's left is the scenery they were ignoring — a wall of karst towers over the Nam Song, blue lagoons in the foothills, and hot-air balloons drifting through it all at dawn.

02Don't miss

  1. Nam Xay viewpoint: 45 sweaty minutes to the motorbike-on-a-cliff photo
  2. Blue Lagoon 3 — further out, emptier, better rope swing
  3. Kayak the Nam Song's gentle stretch past the fishing weirs

11Questions we actually get

Which Blue Lagoon?

BL3 for the swing-and-view combo, BL1 only before 09:00; the numbering is marketing, not ranking.

Is tubing still a thing?

A tame, sober version exists; it's a lazy float now, not the 2011 chaos.

Balloon safety?

Operators fly mornings only in calm wind; if they cancel, take it as a good sign of standards.

Rider's note: Rent a beater bicycle, not a scooter, for the lagoon loop — the dirt roads punish speed.
